greater than the response of similarly treated blanks at the 5-gg level and 400 times greater than the response of methanol to flame ionization detection (1 ,5 ) . The compound in which the methanol is to be determined, must be somewhat water soluble. Complete dissolution of the sample weight taken in the 1-ml water-urea mixture used is necessary to free the methanol for subsequent reaction. Accuracy. The results of methanol spikes in Isohumulone and 3-hydroxy-2-methy1-4H-pyran-4-one are given in Tables I11 and 1V. The recoveries were between 106 and 128%. The Isohumulone samples tested had between 12 and 24 ppm methanol whereas the 3-hydroxy-2-methyl-4H-pyran-4-one samples had between 150 and 600 ppm methanol. The standard curve for methanol in Isohumulone and 3-hydroxy2-methyl-4H-pyran-4-one is shown in Figure 1. A typical elution curve for methanol in Isohumulone is shown in Figure 2. The precision of the procedure is f 10%.
